Reds Place Jose Trevino on IL, Designate Christian Encarnacion-Strand
The Cincinnati Reds placed catcher Jose Trevino on the 10-day injured list retroactive to April 5. The club cited a thoracic spine strain.
The move was announced under the headline Reds Place Jose Trevino on IL. It followed a notable defensive play earlier in the week.
Injury and the defensive play
The play occurred in Texas on April 4. Trevino sprang from behind the plate to field a slow roller and threw out the runner at first.
The Reds won that game 2-0. The play was widely viewed as one of the early season highlights for the team.
Roster changes
To open a 40-man roster spot, Cincinnati moved to Designate Christian Encarnacion-Strand. That decision places his immediate status in waiver limbo.
The club added catcher P.J. Higgins to the 40-man roster. Higgins was called up from Triple-A Louisville to fill the vacancy.
Encarnacion-Strand background
Christian Encarnacion-Strand is 26 years old. He was a fourth-round pick of the Minnesota Twins.
The Reds acquired him at the 2022 trade deadline for pitcher Tyler Mahle. The deal also brought Spencer Steer to Cincinnati.
He debuted in 2023 as part of a wave of prospects. He hit .270 with 13 home runs in 63 major-league games that season.
Injuries and a high strikeout rate limited his ability to lock into the playoff core last year. This season, he was 8-for-36 (.222) with two homers and 14 strikeouts at Triple-A Louisville.
