Luke Grimes Persuades Riley Green to Join Marshals: “I Knew the Risks”
Country singer Riley Green makes his acting debut this month on the Yellowstone spinoff Marshals. The episodes follow the series premiere that launched on March 1.
How the role came together
Luke Grimes helped steer Green toward the part. He and Green were writing together when Marshals began to take shape.
Grimes suggested Green as a potential cast member. He later said, “I knew the risks,” but pushed for him anyway.
Character details
Green plays Garrett, a former Navy SEAL struggling with his past. The character also plays guitar and reconnects with an old team mate.
Grimes portrays Kayce Dutton, now a U.S. Marshal raising his son after his wife’s death. Garrett seeks Kayce’s help adapting to Western life.
Audition and on-set notes
Showrunner Spencer Hudnut wrote a tailored part for Green. CBS still required a formal audition because many executives knew him less.
Green flew to Utah to audition. Grimes read scenes with him during the process.
Producers and cast said Green exceeded expectations. Grimes praised his performance as surprisingly strong for a first-time actor.
Scheduling, ratings and future plans
Marshals airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET on CBS. Grimes said Green’s episodes will arrive in the next few weeks.
The series premiere drew about 9.5 million viewers. That figure marked the most-watched network original premiere without a football lead-in since 2017.
A second season has already been promised after the premiere’s strong start.
Riley Green’s music timing
Green is an established country star, known for the hit “Worst Way.” His sophomore album, Redbird, was released on April 3.
Grimes said he has learned from Green about navigating the entertainment world. Their collaboration now spans music and television.
