New Tax Deadline Announced: April 9 Instead of April 15

Oregon officials are urging taxpayers to mail returns earlier this year. They recommend sending state and federal returns by April 9, not April 15. The move responds to postal changes that could delay same-day postmarks.

Reason for the earlier mailing recommendation

The U.S. Postal Service warned late last year about changes to its processing system. Those changes can prevent mail from receiving same-day postmarks. Oregon’s Department of Revenue therefore advises mailing returns six days ahead.

Electronic filing remains the preferred option

The state and the IRS continue to recommend electronic filing. Electronic submissions usually yield faster refunds than paper returns. In 2025, more than 94% of Oregon taxpayers filed electronically.

Paper filing statistics

Just over 5% of filers used the mail in 2025. That equates to roughly 100,000 paper returns out of about 2 million typical filers. The share of paper filers has fallen each year.

Advice if you must mail

To ensure a timely postmark, Oregon officials suggest mailing by April 9. If you miss that date, visit your local post office counter. Ask a postal clerk for a manual postmark to secure the April 15 filing date.

Drop boxes and state building options

Paper filers may use Department of Revenue drop boxes at several locations. These are intended for state returns only, not federal forms.

  • Salem
  • Portland
  • Gresham
  • Eugene
  • Medford
  • Bend

Final reminders

The Department of Revenue asks taxpayers to file as soon as possible. Officials note that many returns arrive in the final two weeks. Plan ahead to avoid postal or processing delays.
