Sun-soaked Skies Delight on Year’s Warmest Day

The UK recorded its warmest day of the year so far as people headed to beaches under sun-soaked skies. The Met Office logged a provisional temperature of 22.4C at Mona on Anglesey in Wales.

Temperatures and forecasts

Temperatures were expected to rise further, with some areas potentially reaching 25C. Forecasters warned that Wednesday could see highs near 26C in central and south-east England.

Those readings are well above the early April average of 12C to 15C. The Met Office described the episode as more typical of late spring or early summer.

Local scenes and reactions

Beaches and promenades filled quickly as families and holidaymakers enjoyed the warmth. Webcams showed crowds sunbathing at Lyme Regis in Dorset.

Brighton and Hove council leader Bella Sankey said residents and visitors were making the most of the sunshine. She highlighted busy seafront cafes and a packed new seafront park in Hove.

A Weymouth Town Council spokesperson welcomed the visitors enjoying the resort. Local officials hoped the warm spell would boost tourism as spring breaks continue.

How notable is the heat?

Met Office chief forecaster Paul Gundersen said the warmth could be the warmest spell at this point in April since 2020. Many will recall that year for the Covid-19 lockdown.

Short-lived conditions ahead

Forecasters cautioned the warmth will not last. A marked drop in temperatures and more unsettled weather was expected later in the week.

In some places, daytime temperatures could fall by about 10C between Wednesday and Thursday. Residents were advised to plan for cooler, changeable conditions.
