Omaha’s April Snow to Disrupt Morning Commute Tonight

Updated 4:48 PM CDT Apr 6, 2026 — Rain will move into the Omaha area tonight. Models show a transition to snow after midnight. A winter weather advisory covers the region.

Timing and advisory

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory. It runs from 10:00 PM this evening through 1:00 PM Tuesday. Rain and snow should develop after 10:00 PM and changeover to snow is possible after midnight or near 2:00 AM.

Snow is expected to taper off before the morning drive. Still, rush-hour roads could be slushy in spots.

Expected snowfall and model differences

Filmogaz.com meteorologists estimate 1 to 3 inches across much of the Omaha metro. A narrow band could see higher totals.

One model shows about 0.4 inch at Plattsmouth and roughly 1.3 inches for Omaha and Harlan. Another model brings nearly four inches for Harlan and Atlantic. The European run keeps most of the metro in the one-to-two inch range. The American GFS hints at a localized heavy stripe near Atlantic or Crescent.

Where heavier snow may fall

Most guidance points to slightly higher amounts north or northeast of Omaha. In that corridor, accumulations could reach three to five inches. Locations to watch include Red Oak, Harlan, Atlantic, and areas northeast of the metro.

Temperatures and travel impacts

Evening readings are near mid-30s in Omaha, Red Oak, and Fremont. Temperatures may dip to freezing or slightly below briefly overnight. Wet roads could freeze before sunrise in some spots.

This April snow could disrupt the morning commute. Drivers should expect slush and slower travel on secondary streets and ramps.

Short-term outlook

By midmorning, most snow should be done, though a few wet flakes could linger through lunchtime. Roads should be mostly wet rather than icy by midday. Expect clouds for the afternoon.

Next week weather preview

South winds will return and temperatures are forecast to climb. Models suggest highs near 70 on Wednesday with a chance of evening storms. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible Thursday and Friday.
