Sega Genesis’s Poorly Reviewed RPG Returns on Modern Consoles

On April 24, 2026, Shinyuden and Ratalaika Games will release a new version of the 1991 RPG, Traysia, originally developed by Telenet Japan. The reissue will be available on multiple platforms, including PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC (Steam).

Sega Genesis’s Poorly Reviewed RPG Returns

Traysia, a title for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, has not enjoyed a positive reputation. The original Japanese version received a low score of 13 out of 40 from Famitsu and a mere 5.25 out of 10 from Beep! Mega Drive Magazine. Its North American localization fared similarly poorly.

Critical Reception Highlights

Significant criticism came from the UK publication Sega Pro in 1993. The game was noted for its:

  • Poor graphics
  • Unengaging gameplay

German magazine Video Games also pointed out its shortcomings compared to other contemporary RPGs, such as the Phantasy Star series and Shining in the Darkness.

A New Hope for Traysia

Despite its initial unpopularity, Traysia has found a renewed interest in recent years. It appeared in Evercade’s Renovation Collection 1, released in 2022. Following this, a new physical cartridge featuring an updated English translation and a new Spanish option was launched in 2025. The upcoming reissue will likely draw from this version.

Features of the Upcoming Release

The Steam page for the reissue lists several improvements, including:

  • Emulation-based options such as a rewind/turbo feature
  • Save states
  • Screen filters
  • Art gallery
  • Cheat functions
  • Jukebox featuring music by Shinobu Ogawa, the composer known for his work on the Valis series

Game Overview

Traysia tells the story of a young boy named Roy who dreams of becoming a world-traveling adventurer. Leaving his hometown, Roy embarks on an adventure that leads him through mountains and forests to the Kingdom of Salon. Meanwhile, Traysia awaits his return in their hometown, Johanna, a port town.

The game is structured as a comprehensive RPG divided into five scenarios, intertwining themes of fantasy, romance, love, and adventure.

For those interested, the game can be wishlisted on Steam.
