Queen Camilla Unveils Enigmatic Brooch During Maundy Thursday Service

King Charles and Queen Camilla attended Maundy Thursday services at St. Asaph Cathedral in North Wales. The visit marked the first time the service was held in North Wales in its 800-year history.

Historic backdrop

The observance fell on the Thursday before Easter. It is the fifth day of Holy Week and a key event ahead of Easter Sunday.

This was only the second occasion the service took place in Wales. The previous Welsh celebration occurred in 1982 at St. David’s in Pembrokeshire.

Royal appearance and accessories

Queen Camilla wore a navy pleated dress with a matching embroidered coat by Christian Dior. She completed her outfit with a Philip Treacy hat and a black Dior tote.

At the Maundy Thursday service, Queen Camilla displayed an enigmatic brooch. The piece combined sapphires and diamonds in a crown motif.

Media reports linked the brooch to the couple’s 21st wedding anniversary this month. Some outlets suggested King Charles may have gifted the item.

Maundy Money ritual

As tradition dictates, the monarch distributed Maundy Money during the service. The number of recipients equals the sovereign’s age.

At age 77, King Charles presented gifts to 77 men and 77 women. Each person received two purses, one white and one red.

The white purse held specially minted silver Maundy coins. The red purse contained two commemorative coins this year.

This year’s commemoratives marked 100 years since Queen Elizabeth’s birth. They also celebrated the 50th anniversary of Charles’s foundation, The King’s Trust.

Ceremonial detail

Yeomen of the Guard carried the purses in procession. Recipients were honoured for community service and local contributions.

Upcoming Easter attendance

The King and Queen are expected at Easter Sunday services in St. George’s Chapel, Windsor. They will join the Prince and Princess of Wales and other senior royals.

Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie were not expected to attend. The decision followed the recent arrest of their father, the former Duke of York Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

He was released the same day after several hours of questioning. He has denied any wrongdoing.
