Calls for Peace Before Contentious Derry Parade on Easter Monday
Calls for peace have been issued ahead of a hardline republican parade in Derry. The event marks the 110th anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising and is planned for Easter Monday.
Parade details
The National Republican Commemoration Committee (NRCC) is organising the march. The NRCC is arranging events on behalf of the anti-agreement party Saoradh.
The assembly has been notified to the Parades Commission. The commission was due to consider the application on Good Friday.
Organisers expect about 200 participants and roughly 300 supporters. The procession will include one band and proceed from the Creggan shops to the republican plot in the city cemetery.
The event carries the title “unfinished revolution”. It will take place on the same day as a separate march by the Derry 1916 Commemoration Committee.
Parallel march and notification
The Derry 1916 Commemoration Committee parade is usually not notified to the Parades Commission. That march has also experienced disturbances in recent years.
Security and past incidents
Last year, masked men and women wearing combat-style clothing took part in a similar event. Later, petrol bombs and other missiles were thrown at police near Derry’s historic walls.
Police made a number of arrests and seized clothing after the earlier parade. More than a dozen people have since been charged in connection with those incidents.
Calls for calm and leadership
SDLP assembly member Mark H Durkan urged calm and stronger leadership ahead of the march. He warned that policing improvements must be sustained and that the city should avoid a return to violent scenes.
Community leaders have emphasised de-escalation. Local authorities face pressure to maintain public safety during the contentious Derry parade on Easter Monday.
Filmogaz.com will continue to monitor developments and report on any updates. Residents and visitors are urged to follow official guidance and avoid areas of potential disturbance.
