Royal Withdraws from Easter Service Amid Health Update

The Duchess of Edinburgh

The Duchess of Edinburgh was absent from the service. Palace sources said she felt under the weather and decided not to attend.

Her husband, Prince Edward, and their son James, the Earl of Wessex, were present. Their daughter, Lady Louise Windsor, remained away while focusing on studies at St Andrews University.

Prince and Princess of Wales Lead the Family

The Prince and Princess of Wales attended with their three children. It was their first formal Easter outing since the Princess’s cancer diagnosis.

William led the family procession with George, Charlotte and Louis. He acknowledged the crowd outside Windsor Castle as they arrived for the Easter service.

Attire and presentation

Charlotte wore a tan coat. The Princess wore an off-white skirt and jacket with a leafy hat.

William and the boys chose dark blue suits and ties. Camilla arrived in a red wool dress and coat by Fiona Clare.

Her hat was by Philip Treacy. She wore a brooch that once belonged to the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Other Attendees and Guests

Peter Phillips attended with his fiancée, Harriet Sperling. The couple announced plans to marry in June.

Harriet’s daughter Georgina, 15, joined Peter’s daughters, Savannah and Isla. This marked Harriet’s first formal family appearance.

Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie were not present. The King agreed they could make alternative plans for the day.

Context and Wider Issues

Beatrice and Eugenie rejoined the wider family for Christmas at Sandringham three months earlier. Their recent public absence followed separate developments tied to files released by the US State Department in January and an investigation related to their father.

Royal Maundy Service

Royal Easter observances began earlier in the week when the King distributed Maundy gifts. The service took place at St Asaph Cathedral in North Wales.

The King and Queen distributed Maundy Money to 77 men and 77 women. The recipients were honoured for outstanding Christian service to their communities.
