‘Malcolm in the Middle’ Star Turns Down Lucrative Reboot Offer

Erik Per Sullivan declined a substantial offer to reprise his role as Dewey for the new Disney+ revival. He has shifted focus away from acting and toward academic studies.

Reasons for saying no

Jane Kaczmarek told The Guardian that Sullivan is now a dedicated scholar. She said he studies Dickens and is pursuing a master’s in Victorian literature at Harvard.

According to Kaczmarek, Sullivan was offered “buckets of money” to return. He politely refused and chose to remain out of the entertainment spotlight.

Reboot details and casting

The four-episode revival, titled Life’s Still Unfair, will stream on Disney+. The story follows an adult Malcolm as he raises a daughter.

  • Frankie Muniz returns as Malcolm.
  • Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek reprise Hal and Lois.
  • Justin Berfield and Chris Masterson return as Reese and Francis.
  • Caleb Ellsworth-Clark has been cast as the new Dewey.

Cast response and production background

Frankie Muniz told The Post in November 2025 that the cast respected Sullivan’s choice. He said Sullivan is content with the life he built outside show business.

Muniz added that no one wanted to pressure Sullivan into returning. The production had Sullivan’s blessing to recast the role from the start.

How the reboot came together

Muniz said conversations about a revival began more than a decade ago. Bryan Cranston helped lead the push to bring the original cast back.

Sullivan’s recent public life and career

Sullivan starred on Malcolm in the Middle from 2000 to 2006. He last acted in 2010 in the crime thriller Twelve.

In April 2025, he was photographed leaving his Boston home for coffee. It marked the first public sighting in about 18 years.

Filmogaz.com will continue to follow updates on the reboot and cast reunions. Fans remain divided but largely respectful of Sullivan’s decision to prioritize education.
