Bracknell Finance Manager Imprisoned for Embezzling £500,000
A Bracknell finance manager has been imprisoned after diverting almost half a million pounds from a local GP practice. The theft came to light after the practice noticed unusual payments and reported them to police.
Sentencing and defendants
Lauren Millington, 43, of St Mary’s Road in Hook, Hampshire, was jailed at Reading Crown Court. She received three years and two months in custody on 2 April 2026. Millington pleaded guilty to multiple counts of fraud and concealing criminal property.
Her accomplice, Roger Happe, 44, of Alexander Road in Egham, Surrey, avoided immediate imprisonment. He was given a nine‑month suspended sentence and ordered to complete 100 hours of community service. Happe admitted acquiring and using criminal property.
How the fraud was carried out
Millington worked as finance manager at The Waterfield Practice from February 2021 to November 2024. She altered supplier banking details so supplier payments were diverted into her accounts. Investigators say she also created fake invoices and changed company systems to hide the theft.
The total sums diverted exceeded £456,000, just under £500,000. Happe received about £25,190 as part of the scheme.
Investigation timeline
- The practice reported irregular payments to police.
- Both suspects were arrested in January 2025.
- Charges were formally brought in December 2025.
Police response and impact
Thames Valley Police led the inquiry through specialist fraud teams. Officers described the offending as planned and sustained. They highlighted the breach of trust and the harm caused to the practice.
Detective Constable Jagdip Sekhon said investigators uncovered deliberate attempts to conceal the stolen funds. Detective Inspector Duncan Wynn noted the sentence reflected the seriousness of the offences and aimed to deter similar crimes.
Wider lessons
The case underscores the risk of internal fraud in healthcare settings. It also shows the need for stronger financial controls and oversight. Practices should regularly review supplier details and audit accounting changes.
