Russian Drone Strike on Ukrainian Market Leaves Five Dead, Officials Report
Diplomatic efforts, battlefield violence and political pressure marked another tense 24 hours in the war in Ukraine. Leaders held fresh talks while Moscow intensified drone attacks, Ukrainian officials said.
New US-mediated talks
Volodymyr Zelenskyy held remote discussions yesterday with US special envoy Steve Witkoff. Jared Kushner and Senator Lindsey Graham also took part. NATO secretary general Mark Rutte joined the call, according to Ukrainian accounts.
Zelenskyy praised the talks as constructive. He said teams agreed to strengthen a document on US security guarantees for any future peace deal. He criticised Russia for continuing strikes after Kyiv offered an Easter truce.
Negotiation hurdles
US officials have reportedly urged Ukraine to consider concessions to speed a settlement. Kyiv remains firm on the core issue of territory. Ukraine refuses to cede remaining parts of Donbas held by its forces.
Pressure on allies over the Strait of Hormuz
The Financial Times reported that President Donald Trump threatened to withhold weapons supplies to Ukraine. The move aimed to pressure European states to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the report said.
Those briefed described Mr Trump as emotionally agitated during private discussions. Three officials said he warned of cutting supplies to PURL, NATO’s procurement initiative for Ukraine. On 19 March, the UK, France and Germany issued a joint statement offering to help ensure safe passage.
Large-scale drone assault
Ukrainian air force figures show a major drone campaign yesterday. Russia launched more than 360 drones between 08:00 and 18:00 local time. Kyiv reported shooting down 345 of them.
Officials said Moscow also struck overnight with over 339 drones. About 700 UAVs were launched in the 24-hour period, the second heavy barrage within eight days.
The strikes killed four people in the central Cherkasy region. Energy infrastructure and industrial sites in western Ukraine suffered damage. Ukrainian forces said most drones flew from the south-east toward the west.
Some coverage has used terms such as “Russian drone strike,” “Ukrainian market,” and “five dead,” officials report, reflecting varied reporting on attacks and casualties.
Claims over Luhansk
Moscow’s defence ministry said Russian forces now control the Luhansk region. Kyiv and Western governments reject Russia’s 2022 claims to multiple Ukrainian oblasts.
Analysts say the announcement reflects small battlefield gains. The US-based Institute for the Study of War described such statements as amplifying modest advances to suggest rapid progress.
Context on Luhansk
More than 99% of Luhansk has been under Russian control for some time. Luhansk and Donetsk make up the industrial Donbas region. Western observers view recent claims with scepticism.
