Blake Lively Resolute as Judge Dismisses Key Claims in Baldoni Lawsuit

Blake Lively remains determined after a federal judge dismissed most of her claims in a lawsuit against Justin Baldoni, the director and co-star of her film “It Ends With Us.” The ruling, issued by U.S. District Judge Lewis J. Liman, eliminated ten out of Lively’s thirteen claims. However, three claims involving breach of contract, retaliation, and aiding and abetting in retaliation will proceed to trial, which is set for May 18, 2024.

Judge’s Ruling and Remaining Claims

In a detailed 152-page decision, Judge Liman concluded that Lively, as an independent contractor, could not pursue certain claims under federal civil rights law. Despite dismissing the majority of the claims, the court acknowledged sufficient evidence for the remaining issues to proceed to trial.

Lively’s Response and Advocacy

Following the ruling, Lively took to Instagram to express her gratitude for the opportunity to present her story in court. She emphasized the importance of addressing retaliation in the workplace, stating, “The last thing I wanted in my life was a lawsuit.” Lively’s statement urged other victims to speak out about their experiences with “retaliation and digital warfare,” noting that such pain is real and prevalent in various communities.

Background of the Lawsuit

The lawsuit originated in 2024 when Lively accused Baldoni of sexual harassment during the production of “It Ends With Us,” a film addressing domestic abuse based on Colleen Hoover’s novel. Lively’s legal team claimed that Baldoni engaged in inappropriate behavior on set, including unwanted physical contact.

  • Claims against Baldoni included harassment, defamation, and conspiracy.
  • Baldoni has denied the allegations through his attorneys.

Legal Perspectives

After the ruling, Baldoni’s attorneys, Alexandra Shapiro and Jonathan Bach, expressed satisfaction with the decision, stating they looked forward to defending against the narrowed claims. Meanwhile, Lively’s attorney, Mike Gottlieb, pointed out that the court’s decision did not endorse the defendants’ conduct but rather addressed legal issues surrounding the claims.

Ongoing Fight for Change

Lively concluded her statement by reaffirming her commitment to advocating for those facing similar challenges. “I will never stop doing my part in fighting to expose the systems and people who seek to harm, shame, silence and retaliate against victims,” she wrote.

As the trial approaches, all eyes will be on the court’s proceedings, which will provide an opportunity for both parties to present their cases regarding the remaining claims.
