Linux Gaming Surges in March, Doubling macOS Marketshare
Valve’s March 2026 Steam Survey reveals a dramatic shift in platform share among Steam users. Linux usage surged to an all-time high during the month.

Steam on Linux rose to 5.33% in March 2026. That figure marks a 3.10 percentage-point increase from February.
Steam on macOS climbed to 2.35%, a gain of 1.19 points. Windows dropped 4.28 points to 92.33%.

Linux ended 2025 at about 3.5 percent. It dipped in January and fell to 2.23 percent in February.
Before the Steam Deck era, Linux share hovered near one percent. The March jump represents a notable recovery.

Contributing factors
Valve adjusted how it reports Steam China usage. That correction appears to explain some of the month-to-month movement.
Simplified Chinese language use fell sharply by 31.85 percent month over month. English usage rose 16.82 percent to 39.09 percent.
Other languages showed gains as Simplified Chinese declined.
Linux-specific details
About one quarter of Linux players now run SteamOS. The Steam Deck has helped raise awareness of that platform.
AMD processors dominate among Linux Steam users. AMD CPU usage sits just under seventy percent, driven in part by a custom Steam Deck APU.
