Easter Weekend Weather Warnings: Expect Wet and Windy Conditions

Forecasters warn of a wind-driven and unsettled spell across the UK over Easter weekend. Yellow Warnings for wind are in force for parts of the country.

Midweek outlook

On Wednesday a band of rain will move south-eastwards. It will be heavy at times with strong winds across northern Scotland.

The rain is expected to reach northern England and north Wales by evening. Much of the UK will remain cloudy, with some bright or sunny spells developing.

Temperatures will be near or a little above average. Some snow is possible over higher northern hills.

Overnight chill and Thursday

A cold front will push through overnight. Temperatures could fall to around -5°C in rural spots, bringing a widespread frost.

Thursday should see the rain clear and a mostly fine day follow. However, further rain and stronger winds will move into the northwest later on.

Good Friday conditions

Good Friday will be largely cloudy with showery outbreaks of rain. Some showers will be heavy, but brighter intervals will occur.

Conditions will feel blustery, especially near the Pennines. Scotland and Northern Ireland may see sunnier spells, but hill showers could be wintry.

Weekend wind warnings and causes

Friday night’s transient ridge will allow colder air to reach the UK. Saturday morning will be chilly with frost in some areas.

Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Dan Holley says a cold plunge from Canada into the North Atlantic will strengthen the jet stream. That will spin up a deep low towards the northwest of the UK on Saturday night.

This system will bring a period of very strong winds late on Saturday and into Easter Sunday. Yellow warnings cover Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern parts of England and Wales for that time.

Gusts of 50-60 mph are likely across wide areas. Exposed locations could see 60-70 mph. The west of Scotland faces a chance of 80-90 mph gusts.

Winds should gradually ease through Easter Sunday as the low moves into the North Sea. Residents should expect wet and windy conditions at times.
