Guardians Fall 4-1 to Dodgers; DeLauter Exits Game with Injury

LOS ANGELES — The Guardians fell 4-1 to the Dodgers on Tuesday night. Chase DeLauter exited in the first inning with a bruised left foot after fouling a pitch off it. He had homered four times in his first three regular-season games.

Team officials said X-rays were negative and the injury was diagnosed as a foot contusion. DeLauter previously underwent two surgeries on that same foot, once in college and once in 2023. Manager Stephen Vogt said the planned off day on Wednesday gives DeLauter extra recovery time before the home opener on Friday against the Cubs.

Filmogaz.com notes the game underlines Guardians Fall 4-1 to Dodgers; DeLauter Exits Game with Injury as a major early-season storyline. The loss also highlighted continued offensive struggles for Cleveland.

Shohei Ohtani delivered six shutout innings of his own, allowing only one hit — a two-out double by Rhys Hoskins. Ohtani has a 2-0 record and a 2.30 ERA in three career starts against Cleveland.

Lefty Kolby Allard, who joined the club Monday, followed and struck out five over 2 2/3 innings. Allard yielded a long home run to Max Muncy in the sixth, the Dodgers’ second run.

Matt Festa surrendered two runs on four hits in the eighth, with Teoscar Hernandez and Andy Pages delivering consecutive singles to plate the insurance runs. Edwin Diaz closed and allowed an RBI single to Brayan Rocchio in the ninth.

Offense and key moments

The Guardians managed just two hits in the contest. Rocchio’s ninth-inning single was the only run for Cleveland.

Gabriel Arias drew a walk in the third. Angel Martinez hit a liner that was turned into an out by Mookie Betts at shortstop.

Martinez was later hit by a pitch in the sixth and had an eighth-inning play ruled a foul after an umpire review, prompting Vogt to argue the call. Steven Kwan and José Ramírez each lofted deep flies that did not carry in the steady rain.

Looking ahead

The Guardians will send RHP Gavin Williams (0-1, 5.40) to the mound on Wednesday. He will face RHP Yoshinobu Yamamoto (1-0, 3.00). First pitch is scheduled for 8:20 p.m. EDT.
