Arlo Parks Transforms Nighttime Whispers into Lasting Tracks on ‘Ambiguous Desire’

Arlo Parks channels months of nocturnal exploration into her third album. The project draws directly from late nights in New York and personal reinvention.

From nightclubs to the studio

Parks spent the past two years embracing spontaneity and playfulness. She named venues such as Nowadays, Bossa, Basement, Coloring Lesson nights, and Black Flamingo as key influences.

After a 2024 Brooklyn tour stop, she fell for the city and someone who lived there. That period of wandering and new friendships seeded the record.

Recording process and collaborators

Parks began work in a downtown loft with producer Baird. He has previously worked with Brockhampton and Kevin Abstract.

The early sessions produced songs in quick succession. Parks described this pattern as forming the album’s backbone.

  • Sampha appears as a writer and producer. His soulful baritone deepens one track’s emotional inquiry.
  • Parks credits influences such as Dev Hynes and Solange for shaping her pacing and experimentation.

Songs and themes

The album contains 12 tracks that act as snapshots of specific places and moments. Parks uses songs to immortalise nights, streets, and feelings.

Opening track “Blue Disco” pairs distorted synth textures with warm guitar. It sets a reflective, searching tone.

“Heaven” layers glitchy dance beats with keys and strings. It romanticises summer heat and the faint smell of gasoline.

On “Senses,” Parks confronts a destructive relationship. Sampha’s vocal presence amplifies the song’s questioning and vulnerability.

“2sided” captures the nervous tension before approaching desire. “South Seconds” was inspired by Williamsburg’s South 2nd Street and includes a voice message from a friend.

Writing habits and intentions

Parks keeps detailed journals. She records clothing, skies, speeds, and sensory detail after nights out.

That habit informs her songwriting. Each track freezes a moment she does not want to forget.

Sound and direction

The record shifts towards house, electronic, and techno influences. These elements blend with Parks’ signature spacious indie sensibility.

She aimed for music that lets people move and feel. Parks hopes listeners find a soft place to land while navigating transitions.

Personal context and outlook

Following intense touring, a move to Los Angeles, and a public relationship and breakup, Parks used recording as catharsis. She sought healing and self-acceptance.

By the album’s end, she felt more confident and settled. Parks plans to carry newfound lightness into future work.

Parks told Filmogaz.com over a video call from London that she felt excited and ready. She transforms nighttime whispers into lasting tracks throughout the record.

The album, Ambiguous Desire, is released on April 3 via Transgressive Records.
