Volunteers to Restore Onondaga Lake Shoreline on April 18

Volunteers are asked to take part in an Earth Day cleanup at Onondaga Lake on April 18 in Syracuse. The Onondaga Lake Conservation Corps is organizing the two-hour event.

Event details

Volunteers to Restore Onondaga Lake Shoreline on April 18 will meet at the NYSDEC Onondaga Lake Visitors Center on Restoration Way. The cleanup runs from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and proceeds rain or shine.

  • Hosts: Onondaga Lake Conservation Corps with National Audubon Society staff and volunteers.
  • Focus area: southwest shoreline and adjacent wetlands.
  • Duration: two hours, morning session only.

Registration and safety

Organizers require advance registration because space is limited. Participants should sign up before the event to secure a spot.

Bring appropriate clothing for shoreline work. Wear boots or sturdy shoes, long pants and long sleeves.

What organizers provide

The event team will supply plastic bags for collected debris. Volunteers should bring their own work gloves if available.

National Audubon Society personnel will be on site to guide activities. Attendees will learn about birds, wildlife and habitat restoration during the cleanup.

Conservation impact

Chris Lajewski, director of the Onondaga Lake Conservation Corps for the National Audubon Society, described the lake as a conservation success. He said the cleanup lets community members experience restored habitats firsthand.

The effort aims to remove debris that washed ashore over winter. Organizers noted the work will benefit nesting bald eagles, waterfowl and other wildlife.
