Airlines Alert: Jet Fuel Shortage Looms as Supplies Dwindle
U.S. jet fuel prices have surged in recent weeks, raising alarms across the airline industry. The Argus U.S. Jet Fuel Index shows a rise from about $2.17 to $4.57 per gallon by March 27. Airlines warn that inventories could be depleted within weeks if the trend continues.
Immediate airline reactions
United Airlines announced a cut of roughly 5% of planned flights in the near term. CEO Scott Kirby said sustained high fuel prices could add about $11 billion in annual costs.
Delta reported that the fuel spike added up to $400 million in March alone. CEO Ed Bastian said the carrier is moving to pass higher costs onto customers.
Other U.S. carriers
American Airlines also expects fuel to increase first-quarter expenses by about $400 million. Several carriers are trimming off-peak service and suspending select international routes.
Global industry moves
European and Asian airlines are taking action too. Air France-KLM plans higher long-haul fares. Cathay Pacific and other Asian carriers are raising fuel surcharges.
SAS said it will cancel about 1,000 flights in April because of rising costs. Qantas and Thai Airways are adjusting schedules and fares as well.
Supply risks and chokepoints
Much of the world’s jet fuel flows through the Strait of Hormuz. Tanker traffic has slowed amid regional tensions. That has tightened availability.
Jaime Brito, executive director of refining and oil products at OPIS, estimates the Middle East exports about 1.1 million barrels per day of jet fuel. That equals roughly 15–17% of global consumption.
Why jet fuel is vulnerable
Jet fuel inventories tend to be thin. Storage is specialized and spot trading is limited. These factors amplify price swings when supply tightens.
The Strait of Hormuz narrows to about 21 miles at its tightest point. It carries roughly 20 million barrels of oil per day and about one-fifth of global liquefied natural gas.
Impact on travelers and fares
Airlines warn that higher fuel costs will likely lead to price increases for passengers. They also cite a greater risk of route cuts and cancellations.
With supplies dwindle concerns mounting, industry executives issued an airlines alert about a possible jet fuel shortage. Travelers should expect rising fares and more frequent schedule changes.
