Consumers Energy Boosts Rates with New Reliability Action Plan
Kalamazoo, Mich. — Regulators have approved a major reliability program from Consumers Energy. The Michigan Public Service Commission cleared a $277 million 2026 Reliability Action Plan.
Plan specifics
The program targets fewer outages and faster restorations. It also focuses on strengthening the state’s electric grid.
- Double tree-trimming coverage from 8,000 to 16,000 miles.
- Bury additional lines; Consumers says underground lines are about 90% more reliable.
- Install 32,000 new poles built to withstand severe weather.
- Enhance protections against physical and cyber threats to the grid.
Customer costs and rationale
Customers will see a $9 monthly increase starting in May. Consumers Energy is boosting rates to finance this new reliability action plan.
About $6.75 of each additional monthly dollar will fund grid upgrades. The remaining $2.25 covers taxes, mandated fees, and shareholder obligations.
Company response and goals
Consumers Energy said its aim is to restore service quickly after outages. Spokesperson Trisha Bloembergen stressed the company is not yet meeting its 24-hour restoration target.
She said the investment is essential to reach that goal and to improve reliability for customers.
Support for customers
The utility urged customers who face difficulty paying higher bills to contact them. Consumers Energy says it has assistance programs and resources available.
What’s next
The company intends to file its 2027 Reliability Action Plan in June. Regulators and customers will review the next proposal then.
