Astros Dominate Red Sox’s New Pitching Roster in 2026 Debuts
Boston’s struggles carried into Houston on Monday night. The Astros beat the Red Sox 8-1, Boston’s most lopsided loss so far.
Early season skid
The defeat followed two losses that closed Boston’s opening series in Cincinnati. Garrett Crochet and Roman Anthony showed positives on Opening Day. Yet the club has not built momentum since.
Starting pitching and new additions
Left-hander Ranger Suárez started and lasted 4 1/3 innings. He allowed four earned runs on seven hits, one walk and three strikeouts.
Suárez gave up home runs to Yordan Alvarez and Brice Matthews. He signed a five-year, $130 million deal. That contract ranks fourth-highest for a pitcher in franchise history.
Suárez missed much of spring training due to the World Baseball Classic. He only pitched once for Team Venezuela in the tournament. He said health was not a factor in his outing.
Relief struggles and late damage
Johan Oviedo relieved Suárez. Oviedo was acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates in December.
Yainer Díaz hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. Jose Altuve homered on the first pitch of the seventh. Christian Walker added a double that ricocheted off the wall.
Altuve homered again in the eighth. The Astros kept adding runs against Boston’s new pitching roster during its 2026 debuts.
Astros ace silences Boston
Lance McCullers Jr. dominated the Red Sox. He worked seven innings, allowing one earned run on four hits, one walk and nine strikeouts.
McCullers retired the first seven batters. He faced the minimum through most innings. Two Boston hits were erased by inning-ending double plays.
Late rally falls short
Boston’s offense briefly threatened in the seventh. Trevor Story dove into second and was ruled safe after replay review for a double.
Jarren Duran walked and Willson Contreras recorded a force out. Wilyer Abreu hit a ground-rule double to score Duran.
Masataka Yoshida pinch-hit and struck out after an eight-pitch at-bat. Marcelo Mayer walked to lead off the eighth, but the rally died there.
