Man Crashes Pickup into Michigan Synagogue, FBI Links to Hezbollah Influence

Federal investigators say the March attack on Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township was carried out with extremist inspiration. The FBI concluded the assailant acted under influence linked to Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group.

The incident

The crash occurred on March 12, 2026. A Ford F-150 was driven through the synagogue’s closed entrance and into a hallway near an early childhood area.

The vehicle was reported to contain commercial-grade fireworks and jugs of gasoline. Flames ignited during the ensuing confrontation.

Sequence and casualties

The driver sat in the parking lot for several hours before forcing entry. He struck a security guard when the pickup breached the doorway.

An armed exchange followed between the attacker and another guard. The attacker later died from a self-inflicted gunshot.

First responders evacuated the site quickly. Officials said none of the roughly 150 children and staff were injured.

Suspect and motive

Authorities identified the suspect as 41-year-old Ayman Ghazali of Dearborn Heights. Investigators recovered a pre-attack video in which he declared an intent to kill multiple people.

Jennifer Runyan, head of the FBI’s Detroit office, said the act was inspired by Hezbollah. The FBI links to Hezbollah influence were cited as part of the motive assessment.

Investigation details

Agents continue to examine Ghazali’s communications and contacts. They are also probing how he acquired the incendiary materials found in the truck.

Local response

Police tape remained at the scene on March 13, 2026, as investigators processed evidence. Temple officials and local leaders praised the security staff for limiting injuries.
