Maryland Democrats Honor Rep. Nancy Pelosi in Annapolis Ceremony
Maryland Democrats gathered in Annapolis on Monday for a breakfast hosted by Gov. Wes Moore and his wife, Dawn. The event paid tribute to Rep. Nancy Pelosi’s long public service.
Guests and speakers
Most of the state’s congressional delegation attended. State lawmakers, advocates and lobbyists also filled the room.
Rep. Glenn Ivey arrived with former Gov. Martin O’Malley. Former Gov. Parris Glendening was also present.
Sen. Chris Van Hollen and Gov. Moore delivered flattering remarks, a longtime health care advocate said. Vincent DeMarco praised the speakers and Pelosi’s record.
Pelosi’s Baltimore roots
Pelosi spoke about her Baltimore upbringing and its influence on her public life. Guests said she emphasized deep ties to the city.
She was born Nancy D’Alesandro in Baltimore’s Little Italy in 1940. Her father, Thomas D’Alesandro Jr., served in Congress and as mayor.
Her brother, Thomas D’Alesandro III, served as City Council president and later as mayor. Attendees noted the family’s long civic involvement.
Legislative record and retirement
Pelosi has represented San Francisco since 1987, serving nearly four decades in Congress. She is the first woman to serve as U.S. House speaker.
She held the gavel twice, and led the House during major legislative efforts from 2007 to 2011. Those years saw passage of the Affordable Care Act and Dodd-Frank, and repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.
In November she announced she would not seek reelection. After the 2022 midterms she chose not to seek another term as party leader.
Event atmosphere and follow-up
Delegates said the gathering had energy and excitement. People lined up afterward to take photos with Pelosi.
Pelosi was expected to address Maryland lawmakers later that evening. The gathering functioned as both tribute and farewell.
