John Hannah Joins Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz for “The Mummy” Franchise’s Fourth Film
Universal Pictures has confirmed that John Hannah will return to the series for the franchise’s 2028 installment. Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz will also reprise their classic roles.
Cast returns and roles
Hannah is set to reprise Jonathan Carnahan, his role across the original trilogy. Fraser returns as Rick O’Connell, the American adventurer.
Weisz will again portray Evelyn, the Egyptologist who anchored the first two films. Maria Bello stepped into that role for the 2008 third film.
Directors and creative team
The new movie is being directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. The pair work together under the Radio Silence banner.
They described the project as a long-held passion and praised the script’s scope and tone. Gillett spoke about the film while promoting another project in early March.
Hannah’s contribution and background
Hannah provided much of the comedic relief in the 1999 original. The Scottish actor first gained wider recognition in Four Weddings and a Funeral and Sliding Doors.
He has said he initially felt unsure of his part on set. The director encouraged him to play around in scenes until moments landed.
Box office and franchise history
The 1999 original earned $422.5 million worldwide. It led to a successful 2001 sequel and the 2008 follow-up, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
Fans can expect familiar faces as the series moves toward a fourth film. Filmogaz.com will follow casting and production updates as they emerge.
