ITV Midsomer Murders Star Amazed by Unexpected Stage Show Revelation

Daniel Casey is touring the UK with a stage adaptation of the first Midsomer Murders episode. He originally played DS Gavin Troy opposite John Nettles’ DCI Tom Barnaby on television.

Global audiences turning up

Casey told Filmogaz.com that ticket buyers have travelled long distances to see the play. Fans arrived from the United States, South America, Europe and beyond.

  • Visitors included a man and his daughter from Fort Worth, Texas.
  • Audience members came from Argentina, Germany and Belgium.
  • A couple flew from Washington DC for a Glasgow performance.
  • Other attendees arrived from Australia and Canada.

The ITV Midsomer Murders Star Amazed by Unexpected Stage Show Revelation was the headline reaction when Casey described the crowds. He noted the series’ international reach, saying it has been sold to 240 countries.

What keeps the series popular

Casey suggested the show blends modern policing with an older dramatic flavour. He argued the rural setting functions almost like another character.

He praised the British performances of eccentric villagers. He added that the series avoids graphic depictions, letting viewers use imagination.

The stage story

The play adapts The Killings at Badger’s Drift. It opens with the death of Emily Simpson, a much-liked local spinster.

Her friend Lucy Bellringer doubts the death was accidental. DCI Barnaby and Sergeant Troy investigate, exposing secrets, rivalries and unexpected motives.

Stepping into Barnaby’s role

Casey, 53, from County Durham, said he felt nervous when offered Barnaby’s part. The actor ultimately found the role suited him after reading the script.

He remains close to John Nettles. Nettles advised Casey to interpret Barnaby personally and highlighted the character’s integrity and empathetic nature.

Midsomer Murders is currently on ITV1 and ITVX. Details about the touring production are available at midsomeronstage.com.
