Miami Open Final Halted: Players Exit Court, Jannik Sinner Awaits
The Miami Open moved into its final day amid persistent rain and a compressed schedule. Two championship matches were due, but weather repeatedly intervened.
Men’s singles showdown
Jannik Sinner faced Jiri Lehecka in the men’s final. Sinner arrived as the recent Indian Wells winner and the No.2 seed.
Sinner also holds the tournament title from 2024 and aims to complete the Sunshine Double. Lehecka reached his first Masters 1000 final and represents Czech hopes.
Last year fellow Czech Jakub Mensik stunned Novak Djokovic in the final. Lehecka will aim to fly the Czech flag again in 2026.
Women’s doubles interrupted
The women’s doubles final paired top seeds Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini. They opposed Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend.
Siniakova and Townsend form a Czech-American pairing. That duo won Indian Wells recently and could complete the Sunshine Double.
The doubles match began at 12.30pm local time (5pm BST). Rain halted play about an hour later, near the end of the first set.
Scheduling and delays
Organisers moved the doubles match to Grandstand. They wanted flexibility so the men’s final could also be staged.
At times the Miami Open final was halted, with players exiting the court while Jannik Sinner awaited his turn. Sinner and Lehecka were originally scheduled not before 3pm local (8pm BST).
Continuing showers delayed both finals. Play eventually began around 4.20pm local (9.20pm BST) on Stadium, with doubles resuming on Grandstand.
Grey skies and stop-start rain kept timing uncertain. Sinner had warned about the forecast after his semi-final win and expected tricky conditions.
