Yellow Alert: Rain and Snow Hit Nearly Half the Country; Capital on Watch Until Monday

The National Meteorological Administration issued a Yellow Alert on Sunday. The warning covers heavy rain and mountain snow across a large portion of the country.

Scope and timing

The alert is valid from March 29 at 10:00 until March 30 at 10:00. Nineteen counties and Bucharest are included.

Regions most affected are Dobrogea, much of Moldova and Muntenia, and southeastern Transylvania. Rain totals will be locally significant.

Precipitation details

Rain accumulations are forecast at 25–30 liters per square metre. Some places could exceed 30–40 l/m2.

At higher elevations, precipitation will be mixed. Areas above 1,600 metres will receive significant snowfall.

Mountain snow and winds

In the Southern and Eastern Carpathians, snow will settle. Average snow depths of 10–20 cm are expected locally.

Strong gusts of 60–70 km/h may occur there, with blowing snow and whiteout conditions. The situation may become hazardous.

Wind elsewhere

Temporary wind increases are expected in the east and southwest. Gusts of 40–50 km/h are possible in those zones.

Forecast for the capital

Bucharest has a special forecast under the Yellow Alert. The capital remains on watch until Monday.

Skies will be mostly cloudy with significant rain. Daytime highs will reach about 11°C, with lows of 6–7°C.
