Gary Woodland Leads Nicolai Hojgaard in Houston Open Finale at PGA Tour
Gary Woodland holds a one-shot lead over Nicolai Hojgaard heading into the final round of the Houston Open at Memorial Park. Woodland fired a five-under 65 on Saturday to reach 18 under, while Hojgaard posted a 63 after a Friday 62.
Woodland’s return to form
Woodland has not won since his 2019 US Open triumph. He underwent brain surgery in September 2023 and has publicly discussed the mental toll of recovery.
A recent equipment change to his iron shafts helped him regain control. He now leads the field in approach play and ranks second in putting, aided by a slightly adjusted putter.
Key moments on Saturday
Woodland produced crucial shots down the stretch. He hit a two-iron over water to reach the par-five 16th in two for birdie.
He nearly drove the green on the short par-four 17th to set up another birdie. He also finished runner-up at Memorial Park last year.
Hojgaard’s charge
Nicolai Hojgaard, 25, has surged with back-to-back low rounds. The Dane recorded 15 birdies and an eagle across the last two rounds.
Hojgaard has three DP World Tour titles and was a 2023 Ryder Cup rookie. At world No.47, he is close to securing a Masters spot unless an unlikely outcome occurs.
Other contenders and stakes
Defending champion Min Woo Lee sits five shots off the lead after a 67. Michael Thorbjornsen is also five back following a 66.
Thorbjornsen, ranked No.56, could clinch a Masters invitation with a top-eight finish. Woodland would need a win to return to Augusta.
