Avi Lewis Takes Helm: What It Means for NDP’s Future
Avi Lewis won the New Democratic Party leadership at the convention in Winnipeg. He secured 56 per cent of the vote on the first ballot in a ranked-ballot contest.
Victory and convention moments
Lewis emerged from a five-candidate field. His rivals included Alberta MP Heather McPherson, union leader Rob Ashton, farmer Tony McQuail and municipal councillor Tanille Johnston.
After the result, Lewis invited the other candidates on stage. The five embraced as the crowd chanted in support.
Party ties and family legacy
Lewis is an activist and filmmaker. He is the son of former Ontario NDP leader Stephen Lewis.
His grandfather, David Lewis, led the federal NDP from 1971 to 1975. Avi Lewis is now the second Jewish person to lead a federal party.
Internal leadership and party executive
The party held national executive elections the day before the leadership vote. A slate aligned with Lewis won the top posts.
Niall Ricardo was elected president. Former MP Libby Davies became vice-president and Keira Gunn won the treasurer role.
Policy agenda
Lewis framed his campaign as an anti-capitalist movement. He proposed a national cap on rent and a wealth tax on the top one per cent.
He also called for public options for groceries and telecom services. AI policy was central to his platform.
He proposed a moratorium on artificial intelligence data centres. He framed the move as protection for privacy, jobs and the environment.
Environment and economic plans
Lewis pitched a Canada “new green deal.” He proposed investing two per cent of GDP to address climate change.
The plan aims to create one million jobs. Investments would include transit, heat pumps and solar panels.
He also advocated an export tax on oil and gas bound for the United States.
Internal tensions and provincial reactions
Some provincial NDP wings expressed concerns about his environmental approach. Critics linked Lewis to the 2016 Leap Manifesto.
Many blamed the manifesto for harming the Alberta NDP under former premier Rachel Notley. Notley backed Heather McPherson in the leadership race.
Alberta NDP leader Naheed Nenshi signalled differences. He unveiled a provincial energy vision that includes pipelines and oil and gas expansion.
Campaign tone and supporters
Lewis was widely seen as the front-runner. He raised more money than his rivals and held rallies across the country.
An attendee at a Winnipeg rally compared the excitement to the party’s Ed Broadbent era. Former Mulcair chief of staff Raymond Guardia said the party can coalesce after the contest.
Electoral standing and polling
The federal NDP sits at a historic low. The party won seven seats in last year’s election.
The caucus fell to six after MP Lori Idlout joined the Liberals. Alexandre Boulerice’s possible provincial move could reduce numbers further.
Pollster Philippe Fournier reported single-digit and low double-digit support in polls. Abacus Data found voters currently value stability under Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Political opportunity and public mood
Analyst David Coletto said Canadians now focus on U.S. relations and global instability. He warned that calls for radical change face public resistance.
But Coletto also noted long-term issues remain, like climate change and inequality. He suggested there is room for an alternative if it gains attention.
Parliamentary strategy and next steps
Lewis must win a seat to gain House privileges and party funding. Parties need at least 12 seats for official recognition and related resources.
He has previously run twice in British Columbia. He placed third in both federal bids in 2021 and 2025.
A likely byelection opening could appear in Ontario. Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith is exploring a move to provincial politics.
Options for House leadership
Until he wins a seat, Lewis will rely on current MPs to represent the party in the House. Past leaders have used similar arrangements.
Jagmeet Singh led the party without a seat from 2017 until 2019. He asked Guy Caron to lead the caucus in the meantime.
Lewis could ask Heather McPherson to lead in the House. He might also retain interim leader Don Davies for that role.
Filmogaz.com will continue covering how Avi Lewis takes the helm and what it means for the NDP’s future. The party faces internal and electoral tests in the months ahead.
