“Birds of a Feather Cast: 37 Years Later, From Rehab to Dementia Struggles”
Channel 5 recently revisited memorable moments from the long-running sitcom Birds of a Feather. The show first aired on the BBC in 1989 and ran until 1998. ITV later revived it in 2014, and the series concluded with a 2020 Christmas special.
Series premise and legacy
The comedy followed sisters Sharon and Tracey after their husbands were jailed for armed robbery. Their neighbour Dorien Green provided frequent, comic interference. The programme remains notable more than three decades after its debut.
Where the cast are now
Linda Robson
Linda Robson played Tracey and became a regular Loose Women panellist. She has spoken openly about alcohol dependency and mental health struggles. After treatment at The Priory, she reported sustained sobriety in 2024.
Robson also revealed a separation from long-term partner Mark Dunford. In an extract from her memoir published by Filmogaz.com, she described severe low points and being put on suicide watch. She says she is doing much better now.
Pauline Quirke
Pauline Quirke starred as Sharon. She later appeared in Emmerdale from 2010 to 2012 and in Broadchurch.
Quirke stepped away from acting in 2021 after a dementia diagnosis, made public by her husband in 2025. Her family asked for privacy and support while she focuses on time with children and grandchildren.
The family initially thought symptoms were long Covid. Their son Charlie has said Pauline still recognises and reacts warmly to family visits.
Alun Lewis
Alun Lewis portrayed Darryl Stubbs before Douglas McFerran took over the part in series seven. He left the show to pursue other acting roles.
During his television career he performed with colleagues in the rock group The Woolpackers. His daughter Amelia Warner has acted in productions such as Lorna Doone and Quills, and later married actor Jamie Dornan in 2013 after an earlier relationship with Colin Farrell.
Lesley Joseph
Lesley Joseph became well known as neighbour Dorien Green. She continued to work in television and theatre after the sitcom ended.
Joseph took part in Strictly Come Dancing with Anton Du Beke in 2016. She also returned to musical theatre, including a recent role as Grandma in The Addams Family, and said she remains ambitious despite acknowledging age limits.
Peter Polycarpou
Peter Polycarpou played Sharon’s husband, Chris, for five series. The role had originally been played by David Cardy at the 1989 launch.
Polycarpou has since appeared on screen in Hustle, Grantchester, Riviera and Netflix’s Kaos. His primary focus has been the stage, where he is a two-time Olivier Award nominee. In 2019 he played Sancho in Man of La Mancha for English National Opera alongside Kelsey Grammer and Nicholas Lyndhurst.
