Steven Tyler: 1948 Birth of Hard Rock’s “Demon of Screamin'”

Steven Tyler remains one of hard rock’s most recognizable voices. He was born on March 26, 1948, in New York City.

Early life and first recordings

Tyler’s teenage years were spent around Greenwich Village. He saw the Rolling Stones perform there as a young fan.

He was expelled from high school shortly before graduation after a marijuana-related incident. His first studio credit was a backing vocal on The Left Banke Too.

Early bands and meeting future bandmates

In the mid-1960s he formed The Strangeurs, later renamed Chain Reaction. That group did not achieve commercial success.

Near the end of the 1960s, he watched Joe Perry and Tom Hamilton perform. The three musicians joined forces in 1970 and formed Aerosmith.

Songwriting and breakthrough

Tyler penned “Dream On” before Aerosmith was officially formed. The song became one of the band’s defining early tracks.

Aerosmith signed with Columbia Records. The 1976 album Rocks reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Commercial arc and comebacks

The band experienced a decline in the early 1980s. A revival began mid-decade and culminated with Permanent Vacation in 1987.

Under Tyler’s lead vocals, 21 Aerosmith songs reached the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100. The group cemented its place in hard rock history.

Vocal injury and retirement

In 2023, Tyler suffered a serious vocal injury. He was unable to fully recover and several farewell tour dates were cancelled.

The cancellations effectively ended his tenure as Aerosmith’s frontman. He still performs occasionally, but years as the “Demon of Screamin'” have taken their toll.

Legacy

Born in 1948, Tyler helped define hard rock vocals for a generation. His wide range and stage persona left a lasting imprint on the genre.
