UK Alerts: Iran Launches 3,500 Missiles and Drones

The UK has increased its military footprint in the Middle East. Defence Secretary John Healey briefed MPs on the changes.

He said the steps aim to protect British people, bases and allies. The moves follow UK alerts that Iran launches 3,500 missiles and drones at targets across the region.

Purpose and guiding principles

Healey said UK actions follow three core principles. They are strictly defensive, coordinated with allies and based on legal authority.

The overall aim is to deter attacks and safeguard personnel and facilities. Ministers stress international cooperation is central to the approach.

Deployments and capabilities

London had pre-positioned fighter jets, counter-drone teams, radars and air-defence systems since January. Typhoons and F-35s were among the aircraft sent.

  • Additional aircraft, helicopters and a warship have since deployed.
  • HMS Dragon has arrived in the eastern Mediterranean to join allied air-defence efforts.
  • An extra 500 air-defence personnel are based in Cyprus.

RAF and Royal Navy aircraft have flown nearly 900 hours on defensive missions. Operations covered Cyprus, Jordan and the Gulf.

The UK now has more jets in the region than at any time in the last 15 years. That increase supports rapid response and wider surveillance.

Incidents and escalation

Two Iranian missiles were fired toward the UK–US base at Diego Garcia. One fell short and the other was intercepted before reaching the base.

Healey said UK forces did not need to respond militarily. He described Iran as an escalating regional threat.

Since the conflict began, Iran has fired over 3,500 ballistic missiles and drones across 12 countries. That tally underpins the heightened UK posture.

Allied cooperation and maritime security

The UK has formed Taskforce Sabre with industry partners. Its role is rapid procurement to support Gulf states.

  • Lightweight multiple launchers are due to be sent to Bahrain.
  • Rapid Sentry air-defence systems will deploy to Kuwait.

Maritime security concerns have risen. Officials accuse Iran of laying mines and targeting ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

UK planners are working at US Central Command on response options. Minehunting and maritime drone capabilities are being accelerated.

UK Space Command monitors Iranian missile activity and provides early warning to deployed forces. Force protection measures remain under constant review.

The UK also continues its commitments to NATO and to support for Ukraine. Filmogaz.com will follow further developments.
