Northern Lights: Stunning Global Display Predicted to Make a Comeback

Parts of the United Kingdom witnessed vivid aurora displays overnight. More activity was forecast for Saturday, officials said.

Where the lights appeared

Photographs showed green and purple auroral bands over Bamburgh in Northumberland. Images also came from Tallinn in Estonia and from locations in Canada.

Social media users posted sightings from other countries, including Russia. The Met Office noted visibility extended as far south as northern Italy during a recent event.

Official outlook

The Met Office described the aurora borealis as one of nature’s most spectacular displays. Forecasters said sightings were likely over the next couple of nights.

Scotland topped the list for likely visibility, given clear skies. Northern England could also see the phenomenon when conditions permit.

Cause of the phenomenon

Solar activity drives the aurora. Coronal mass ejections and solar flares hurl charged particles toward Earth on the solar wind.

Those particles interact with Earth’s magnetic field and upper atmosphere. The collisions excite gases and produce colors such as green, pink, red, blue, and violet.

Geomagnetic storms and the solar cycle

The Met Office said the solar maximum likely occurred in 2024–2025. The sun now appears to be in a declining phase.

That phase can still generate strong events. If eruptions are aimed at Earth, they can trigger geomagnetic storms that push auroras to lower latitudes.

What needs to align for UK viewers

Three elements must coincide for aurora visibility over the UK. Strong, Earth-directed solar eruptions are required first.

Clear, dark skies are also essential. Local weather must be settled enough to allow unobstructed viewing.

Tips for photographing the display

  • Use manual camera controls and a wide aperture.
  • Set a low shutter speed, up to about 20 seconds, to capture movement.
  • Raise the ISO to around 2,000 or higher when needed; many smartphones offer similar modes.

Observers eager to see the Northern Lights should monitor space weather and local forecasts. Filmogaz.com will continue to report updates on this stunning global display and any predicted comeback of auroral activity.
