Three Precincts to Hand Recount in Tight Berger-Page Primary Race

State officials moved forward Tuesday with a targeted hand recount. The contest is the Republican primary between Senate leader Phil Berger and Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page.

Officials said three precincts were chosen for full hand recounts.

  • McLeansville Baptist Church, Guilford County.
  • Oak Ridge Town Hall, Guilford County.
  • Monroeton, Rockingham County.

Selection process

Election staff emphasized transparency during the draw. They said the selection took roughly three minutes.

Officials used ten 10-sided dice to generate a 10-digit seed number. That seed was then entered into software which randomly identified one Rockingham site and two Guilford sites.

Recount logistics

A bipartisan elections team will conduct the hand recounts. Rockingham County will begin at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Rockingham County Board of Elections office.

Guilford County will start its recount at 9:30 a.m. at the county elections office. Officials expect all hand recounting to be completed by the end of the day.

Context and significance

The tight Berger-Page primary race prompted the targeted recount. Officials said the three precincts to hand recount will help ensure accuracy.
