Brett Larson Appointed Head Coach of Gopher Men’s Hockey Team
The University of Minnesota announced a coaching change for its men’s ice hockey program. Brett Larson will take over following the departure of Bob Motzko last week.
The two sides agreed to a five-year contract. The deal awaits approval from the Board of Regents.
Record at St. Cloud State
Larson spent eight seasons as St. Cloud State’s head coach. He led the Huskies to four NCAA Tournament berths.
Under his direction, St. Cloud State reached its first national championship game. The team’s most recent season ended with a loss to the University of Minnesota-Duluth.
Coaching background
Before St. Cloud State, Larson served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, the University of Minnesota-Duluth. He also has professional playing experience with the Detroit Red Wings.
His résumé includes collegiate and international coaching assignments. Those experiences were central to the university’s evaluation.
Administration response and coach’s reaction
Director of Athletics Mark Coyle praised Larson’s leadership and vision. Coyle said Larson understands the responsibility of guiding a premier program.
Larson described the position as an honor he does not take lightly. He pledged to build on the program’s history while working to return the team to top-level competition.
Other coaching moves
The university also announced a change in the women’s program on Monday. Greg May will become the head coach after the department and Brad Frost parted ways.
