Jay-Z Rejects Sexual Assault Settlement: ‘It’s Not in My DNA’
Jay-Z spoke about the intense anger he experienced after being named in a lawsuit alleging sexual assault. He discussed the legal battle and his decision not to accept a settlement in a recent interview with Filmogaz.com.
The lawsuit and legal timeline
The original complaint was filed in 2024 by a Jane Doe. She alleged that Jay-Z and Sean “Diddy” Combs assaulted her at a 2000 VMAs afterparty when she was 13.
Both men denied the accusations. Jay-Z then sued the plaintiff and attorney Tony Buzbee for malicious prosecution and defamation.
The Jane Doe later dropped her suit last year. Jay-Z’s countersuit was dismissed a few months after that.
Why he refused a settlement
Jay-Z said he could have taken a quick, cheaper settlement. He chose not to because the idea conflicted with his principles.
He framed the decision as personal and habitual. As he put it, taking a payout “It’s Not in My DNA” and would have been impossible for him.
Emotional toll and creative restraint
The ordeal left him angrier than he had been in years. He said it drained him and required strong support from those close to him.
He avoided translating that anger into music. He worried that harsh songs would add negativity to a fraught moment.
Recent creative focus and future plans
Jay-Z has not released a solo album since 2017’s 4:44. He said he found creative fulfilment by assisting his wife Beyoncé on recent projects.
He described that work as both family duty and an enjoyable challenge. He also said he plans to shift to offense in 2026 after years of defending himself.
Live dates and next steps
He is scheduled for several shows this year. That includes two nights at Yankee Stadium in New York City.
On new music, he expressed uncertainty. He stressed a need for honesty and timelessness in any future recordings.
