April DWP Benefit Payment Dates Announced
April brings a series of financial changes across the UK as the fiscal year ends. Payment schedules for many benefits will shift because of the Easter bank holidays.
Bank holiday impact on payment dates
If a benefit payment falls on Good Friday or Easter Monday it will usually be paid early. Payments due on Friday 3 April and Monday 6 April should arrive on Thursday 2 April.
This adjustment follows gov.uk guidance that payments landing on weekends or bank holidays are normally made on the previous working day. The change affects a wide range of payments and may mean money needs to stretch for a longer period.
Which benefits are affected
Most DWP-administered payments follow the earlier date. This includes Universal Credit, State Pension, Pension Credit, Child Benefit, DLA and PIP.
- Universal Credit
- State Pension
- Pension Credit
- Child Benefit
- Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
- Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
State Pension timing and rules
State Pension payments are made into bank accounts, like other benefits. The payment day usually matches the last two digits of the recipient’s National Insurance number.
The same early-pay rule for bank holidays applies to State Pension payments. Recipients should check their usual payment date and plan for the earlier arrival.
Upratings and allowance increases from April 2026
Several benefits will be uprated from April 2026 to reflect inflation. DWP benefits linked to inflation will rise by 3.8 percent, matching HMRC-administered inflation-linked benefits.
Universal Credit standard allowances will receive an additional uplift of 2.3 percent. The basic and new State Pension will increase by 4.8 percent from April 2026.
Who is affected and wider cost changes
About 24 million people in the UK currently claim at least one DWP-administered benefit. A recent Cost of Living Action Group analysis found 63 percent of people cut back on essentials to cope with rising costs.
Other April price changes include higher charges for council tax, water rates and TV licences. Households should review budgets ahead of these increases.
What to do if a payment is missing
Benefits are generally paid straight into a bank, building society or credit union account. If a payment expected after the date change has not arrived, contact the DWP helpline on 0800 328 5644.
Bear in mind the helpline is closed on bank holidays. Also confirm account details and check gov.uk guidance on payment timing.
