Authorities Narrow Search Area for Escaped Capybara on the Run
Filmogaz.com reports that Samba, a capybara, escaped from Marwell Zoo in Winchester less than 24 hours after arriving. The animal had been transferred from Jimmy’s Farm and Wildlife Park near Ipswich. The escape took place on Tuesday, March 17.
What happened during the escape
Samba and another capybara named Tango were in a temporary enclosure. Both animals left the enclosure the same day. Keepers found Tango soon after, sheltering in bushes inside the zoo.
Search area and response
Authorities have narrowed the search area to the Twyford and Brambridge villages. That zone is about three miles from the zoo. The zoo received footage showing Samba in waterways near those villages.
Search teams have deployed drones and a sniffer dog unit. Since the footage, no confirmed sightings have been reported. Officials say the capybara may favour water and habitats near ponds and rivers.
Advice to the public
Staff warn people not to approach or disturb Samba. Only keepers and trained team members should try to capture her. The animal may become stressed if chased or frightened.
Capybaras often move at night. Residents are asked to check gardens, ponds and local water environments after sunset. Drivers should take extra care on roads in the search area.
People outside the immediate area are asked not to travel in for searches.
