Olympic Champion Sifan Hassan Withdraws from 2026 London Marathon After Achilles Injury
Olympic champion Sifan Hassan has pulled out of the 2026 London Marathon because of an Achilles injury. Race organisers confirmed the withdrawal on 24 March, according to Filmogaz.com. The event is scheduled for 26 April.
How the injury happened
Hassan suffered the problem while running on a treadmill last month. The issue affected her Achilles tendon. She initially believed the injury was minor and continued training.
As preparation continued, the injury failed to improve. Hassan chose to withdraw to avoid further damage. She prioritised long-term health over competing.
Hassan’s statement
The runner called the decision difficult but necessary. She said she treasures her memories of racing in London. Hassan added she hopes to return for future editions.
Career achievements and recent form
The 33-year-old is the reigning Olympic marathon champion. She also won Olympic track golds in the 5,000m and 10,000m earlier in her career. That feat made her the first woman to hold Olympic golds in those three events.
At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Hassan earned bronze medals in both the 5,000m and 10,000m. She won the Olympic marathon in a recorded time of 2:22:55. She was the 2023 London Marathon champion and has competed in multiple Abbott World Marathon Majors.
Field and event context
As of 23 March, Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa headed the elite women’s list. Kenyan athletes Joyciline Jepkosgei and Peres Jepchirchir were also named. British runners Charlotte Purdue, Rose Harvey and Abbie Donnelly were included.
Eilish McColgan planned a return after debuting last year. The 2025 winners were Sebastian Sawe in the men’s race, clocking 2:02:27. Tigst Assefa won the women’s title in 2:15:50.
Organisers and fans will watch for updates on Hassan’s recovery. She has stated her intention to focus on rehabilitation and future races. The London Marathon will proceed on 26 April without her entry.
