Operation Seizes €1M in Counterfeit Money, Four Detained

Two Bulgarian and two Romanian nationals were arrested during a coordinated counterfeiting probe in Sofia. The detentions happened around 6:00 p.m. on Monday during a money transaction.

Arrests and suspects

The Counterfeiting Division of the General Directorate for Combating Organized Crime led the operation. Four detained individuals include two Bulgarian citizens and two Romanian citizens.

Authorities carried out the arrests during a planned handover. The operation targeted suspects believed to be involved in producing and distributing forged notes.

Seized cash and evidence

Investigators recovered a large volume of counterfeit 100 euro notes. The GDCOC told BTA the fake banknotes total approximately EUR 1 million.

Searches of two vehicles and personal searches produced the majority of the material. Officials described the haul as substantial and professionally produced.

Scope of the operation

The raids took place at several locations around the capital. Teams worked simultaneously to prevent the suspects from dispersing evidence.

Interior Ministry Secretary General Georgi Kandev posted details on Facebook. He confirmed the arrests and the items seized.

Context and next steps

Authorities will continue forensic checks on the seized banknotes. Prosecutors are expected to press charges once formal investigations conclude.
