Irvine Welsh adapted his own novel for the stage. He also co-wrote music and lyrics with Stephen McGuinness.

Casting and source material
Robbie Scott has been cast as Renton. This role will mark his West End debut.
Further casting details will be announced in due course. The story revisits Renton, Sick Boy, Begbie, Spud, Tommy and Kelly.
Legacy of the film
The musical follows the characters three decades after the 1996 film adaptation. That film starred Ewan McGregor.
The 1996 film was the highest-grossing UK film of its year. It later won a BAFTA for Best Screenplay.
The British Film Institute included the film in its list of the 100 greatest British films of the 20th century.
Music and tone
The score blends songs associated with the original film with new material written for the stage. The production aims for both emotional depth and broad entertainment.
Welsh has described the musical as offering a fresh and more openly human perspective than earlier versions.
Dates and ticketing
The show opens at the Theatre Royal Haymarket on Wednesday 15 July 2026. Tickets went on sale at 8am on Tuesday 24 March.
