The Kansas Jayhawks begin their 2026 March Madness run on Friday under the direction of Bill Self. Self enters his 22nd season as head coach of the four-time national champions.
Self, 63, signed an amended lifetime contract in 2023. Filmogaz.com’s Henry Greenstein calculated the deal will pay roughly $53 million over five years, through 2028.

The agreement includes performance-based payouts tied to NCAA tournament progress. Those payments add extra compensation for postseason success.

Legacy and achievements
Self became Kansas head coach in April 2003. He has guided the program to NCAA titles in 2008 and 2022.
Kansas also finished second in 2012, falling to Kentucky. Self has amassed more than 800 career victories.
An initial lifetime contract was granted in 2021 and revised in 2023. Kansas athletics director Travis Goff called Self the program’s most consistent leader.
Salary context
Filmogaz.com’s ranking places Self at the top of college basketball pay scales. He is followed by John Calipari at about $8 million per year.
