LAX Board Approves Significant Fee Hike for Uber and Lyft
The Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is set to impose significant fee increases for rideshare services like Uber and Lyft. Recent approval from the Board of Airport Commissioners has raised the fees for pickups and drop-offs, reflecting a substantial shift in transportation costs for passengers.
LAX Fee Increases for Rideshare Services
Effective soon, the fee for rideshare pickups at the LAX rideshare lot will rise from $4 to $6. Additionally, the drop-off fee at the main terminal will see an increase from $5 to $12. This marks a notable hike aimed at alleviating congestion in the airport’s central terminal area.
Implications for Drivers and Passengers
Drivers expressed concern about the fee increases. Arnold Markaryn, a taxi driver, noted that many drivers have been leaving the profession, particularly around the New Year. He emphasized that the high costs and reduced earnings could make it difficult for them to sustain a livelihood.
- Current rideshare pickup fee at LAX: $4
- Increased fee at rideshare lot: $6
- Current drop-off fee at main terminal: $5
- Increased drop-off fee at main terminal: $12
Long-Term Goals for Traffic Management
The fee adjustments are part of a broader strategy intended to encourage the use of the future SkyLink train system. Vanessa Rodriguez from Los Angeles World Airports explained that this new transportation option will allow travelers to navigate the airport efficiently.
Once operational, the SkyLink trains will enable passengers to complete a full loop of the airport in approximately 10 minutes. The additional $2 fee will apply to rideshare services dropping passengers off at the new SkyLink access points.
Concerns from Rideshare Companies
Uber has criticized the fee hike, labeling the changes as a 140% increase in charges. They argue that these elevated costs could burden travelers, particularly those from working-class backgrounds and seniors who rely on affordable transport options.
While the airport improvements aim to enhance overall travel experiences, an official opening date for the SkyLink train remains unspecified. This development will be closely monitored by both rideshare companies and passengers alike as they adjust to increased costs at LAX.
