N.S. Gas Prices to Shift Overnight
The Nova Scotia Energy Board has activated its interrupter clause for the second time this month, resulting in gas price changes. The adjustment is scheduled for 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday. This decision responds to significant fluctuations in market prices.
N.S. Gas Prices Shift Overnight
The board has not disclosed whether the prices will rise or fall. However, recent trends indicate a sharp increase; gas prices surged nearly 15 cents per liter last week due to two separate hikes. Experts predict that prices may rise further.
Market Influences
The interrupter clause enables the board to react to urgent changes in the petroleum market, allowing for price adjustments ahead of the usual schedule. Currently, North American oil markets are impacted by escalating tensions in the Middle East. Notably, the U.S. and Israel launched a coordinated attack on Iran last month.
Impact of Middle Eastern Conflicts
Experts warn that the conflict could lead to sustained higher gas prices, particularly if it disrupts oil tanker access to the Strait of Hormuz. This strait is recognized as one of the busiest and crucial naval shipping routes globally.
Dan McTeague, a petroleum analyst from GasWizard.ca, explained on CBC Radio’s Information Morning how these geopolitical tensions contribute to rising fuel prices. “It’s not just oil being affected. Iran has retaliated by targeting refinery facilities and LNG plants in neighboring countries,” McTeague stated.
This disruption in oil and gas supply has resulted in significant price increases for fuel, affecting both Canadian consumers and the global market.
