Malkin Ejected for Slashing Sabres’ Dahlin in Head
Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin faced ejection during a recent matchup against the Buffalo Sabres. His departure came after he received a five-minute major penalty for slashing, alongside a game misconduct.
Malkin’s Ejection Explained
The incident occurred in the second period when Malkin struck Sabres defenceman Rasmus Dahlin across the neck. This altercation followed some pushing between players near the Sabres’ net. After Dahlin cross-checked him, Malkin reacted, turning to strike Dahlin with his stick.
Player Safety Concerns
Following the hit, Dahlin braced himself, and players were quickly separated. Malkin’s actions have raised concerns given his history of on-ice aggression, which includes multiple fines and suspensions. Throughout his 20-year career, Malkin has been fined three times and has received two suspensions.
Notably, he was suspended for one game in February 2019 for high-sticking against the Philadelphia Flyers. Additionally, in April 2022, he received a four-game suspension for cross-checking an opponent in the face during a game against the Nashville Predators.
Impact on the Penguins
Malkin’s ejection is particularly detrimental for the Penguins, who have been actively pursuing a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. They currently hold a record of 31 wins, 16 losses, and 13 overtime losses. This comes at a time when the team is already missing captain Sidney Crosby, out due to a leg injury from the Olympics in February.
Malkin’s Season Performance
- Malkin has scored 13 goals this season.
- He has accumulated 47 points over 45 games.
- He ranks second on the team for points, following Crosby, who has 59 points.
Sabres Capitalize on Power Play
In the wake of Malkin’s ejection, the Sabres took advantage of the power play. Josh Norris scored, allowing Buffalo to take a 2-1 lead early in the second period. This incident highlights not only the intensity of the game but also the crucial role player discipline plays in competitive hockey.
