Sharp and Wharton Collide in Major Formula 3 Crash
In a dramatic turn of events during the first round of the 2026 Formula 3 season, Louis Sharp and James Wharton collided, resulting in a significant crash that ended both drivers’ races early.
Race Highlights
The race commenced with enthusiasm as Sharp, starting from thirteenth place, quickly advanced. By the end of the first lap, he had moved into ninth place after executing a successful maneuver on Freddie Slater.
Continuing his strong performance, Sharp captured eighth position, closely trailing his teammate Wharton and Alpine’s Nico Lacorte. Unfortunately, technical issues with track software delayed the activation of the Drag Reduction System (DRS), which held back some overtaking opportunities.
Collision Details
By lap eight, Sharp aimed to overtake Wharton. He attempted to pass on the outside at turn three, then tried a switchback move at turn four. However, Wharton defended strongly, resulting in Sharp getting pushed wide towards turn five.
When approaching turn six, the two drivers tangled, ultimately leading to both cars crashing into the barriers with considerable force. The severity of the accident necessitated the deployment of a safety car, which later evolved into a red flag situation.
- Both Sharp and Wharton reported they were unharmed after the collision.
- Sharp expressed frustration over team radio regarding the incident with his teammate.
Race Outcome
Due to the extensive damage from the crash, both drivers were forced to retire. With the race not resuming, points were awarded only to the top five drivers, as over 25% of the race distance was completed.
Top Finishers
Van Amersfoort Racing clinched a remarkable 1-2 finish, with Bruno del Pino securing victory, followed by Enzo Deligny in second place. Rodin’s Brando Badoer completed the podium, finishing third.
The next feature race is scheduled for tomorrow at 10:50 AM NZST on March 8th.
