Enhancing Tasmanian Heritage Skills Through Construction Tools

The City of Launceston Council is initiating a scholarship program to enhance the heritage skills of local tradespeople, focusing on the construction tools necessary for the upkeep of Tasmania’s historic buildings. This initiative encourages qualified tradespeople, residing in or working within Launceston, to develop specialized skills in built heritage conservation.

Scholarship Program Overview

The Council, guided by its Heritage Advisory Committee, aims to fund the fees for two successful candidates. The scholarship covers a six-day Practical Building Conservation course offered by the Longford Academy. This comprehensive program combines both practical and theoretical training.

Course Content

Key components of the course include:

  • Paint stripping techniques
  • Addressing damp issues and salt extraction
  • Working with traditional lime-based materials, including mortars, plasters, and limewashes
  • Diagnosing timber decay and assessing repair needs
  • Understanding roofing systems and metals in heritage contexts

This curriculum is tailored for tradespeople engaged in hands-on work, as well as those who oversee or specify conservation projects. The Council emphasizes that participants will gain significant insights into the challenges associated with maintaining and restoring older structures.

Mayor’s Statement

Mayor Matthew Garwood highlighted the importance of this initiative by stating, “Launceston boasts a rich architectural heritage, from Victorian homes to historic public buildings. The preservation of these sites relies on skilled tradespeople familiar with their original construction methods.”

He also expressed the program’s broader aim: “Supporting local trades to develop and retain traditional competencies ensures that this vital knowledge remains within our community and is shared among future generations.”

Application Process

Applications for the scholarship are currently being accepted. Interested tradespeople can submit their expressions of interest via the City of Launceston’s official website. The deadline for applications is set for 5 PM on Friday, April 3rd.

Eligible candidates must reside or work in Launceston and will be selected based on their current trade expertise, demonstrated interest in heritage conservation, and the potential application of these skills in local projects.

This scholarship program presents a valuable opportunity for local tradespeople to enhance their skills while contributing to the preservation of Launceston’s architectural heritage.
