BYD Launches Faster-Charging Blade Battery to Boost China Sales

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has introduced a significant upgrade to its battery technology, the second-generation Blade Battery. This announcement aims to enhance the company’s competitiveness amid a challenging domestic market.

Faster-Charging Technology

The newly unveiled Blade Battery can charge from 20% to 97% in under 12 minutes, even in extremely cold temperatures of minus 20 degrees Celsius. This rapid charging capability allows vehicles to achieve a remarkable driving range of 777 km (483 miles).

Enhanced Models

According to Wang Chuanfu, BYD’s chairman, the upgraded battery will empower their premium Denza Z9GT and luxury Yangwang U7 models to exceed a 1,000 km driving range. These high-density batteries have also surpassed China’s latest safety tests, ensuring they meet national standards.

Expansion Plans

In addition to the battery launch, BYD is accelerating its efforts to expand its charging infrastructure. The company targets launching a “Flash Charging” network comprising 20,000 charging stations by the end of 2026. Currently, BYD has established over 4,000 stations across the country.

Market Position and Sales Challenges

Despite its technological advancements, BYD has experienced a decline in domestic sales, losing its position as the top-selling electric vehicle manufacturer to Volkswagen and Geely. This drop in sales follows the expiration of China’s purchase tax exemption for electric vehicles and more competitive pricing from traditional automakers.

  • BYD’s total vehicle sales: 3.76 million units
  • Sales of new models (Han L sedan, Tang L SUV): 49,000 units
  • Expected charging stations by 2026: 20,000

The company has introduced longer-range plug-in hybrids and low-interest financing plans, seeking to adapt to a market that increasingly values quality over aggressive pricing strategies.

Conclusion

BYD’s innovations reflect a strategic push to reclaim market share and enhance customer satisfaction. The combination of advanced battery technology and an extensive charging network positions BYD as a key player in China’s evolving electric vehicle market.
