BYD Reveals Blade Battery 2.0: 5-Min Fast Charge, 20,000 Stations by 2026
BYD, the leading manufacturer of new energy vehicles, has launched its second-generation Blade Battery and Flash Charging technology. This new battery significantly enhances energy density and minimizes charging times, even under extreme weather conditions.
Blade Battery 2.0: Fast Charging Innovations
The highlight of this technological advancement is the impressive charging speed of the second-generation Blade Battery. It charges from 10% to 70% in just 5 minutes, and 10% to 97% in only 9 minutes. Remarkably, it delivers rapid charging even in freezing temperatures:
- 20%-97% charge in 12 minutes at -20°C
- 20%-97% charge in 15 minutes at -30°C
In normal conditions, charging from 30% to 50% is 30%-50% faster than conventional EV batteries. The new Blade Battery features a 5% increase in energy density, enhanced lifespan, and complies with stricter safety standards.
Vehicle Performance with Blade Battery 2.0
The Denza Z9GT, equipped with this advanced battery, boasts an impressive range of 1036 kilometers on a single charge. Other models demonstrate similar quick charging capabilities:
| Model | 10%-70% Charging Time |
|---|---|
| Yangwang U74m | 54 seconds |
| Denza N9 | 58 seconds |
| Fang Cheng Bao | 59 seconds |
| Seal 07 | 5 minutes 1 second |
| Great Tang (Datang) | 5 minutes 2 seconds |
Infrastructure Expansion: Flash Charging Stations
To support the new battery technology, BYD is developing a network of Flash Charging stations. These stations feature a user-friendly T-shaped design and are equipped with compact, waterproof charging guns. Each station provides a maximum output of 1500 kW with a high voltage of 1000V for fast charging, even in cold weather.
BYD plans to establish 20,000 Flash Charging stations by the end of the year, including:
- 18,000 “stations-within-a-station”
- 2,000 highway charging stations covering one-third of service areas
These stations will be strategically located to ensure availability every 100 kilometers. Installation is touted as simple and efficient, similar to installing an air conditioner.
Collaborative Charging Solutions
BYD’s CEO, Wang Chuanfu, discussed the potential strain on the power grid due to high charging speeds. The company’s strategy involves using energy storage batteries to collaborate with existing public charging stations, implementing a “station-within-a-station” model.
According to Wang, this approach facilitates rapid deployment of Flash Charging stations without adding stress to the power grid. In just two months, BYD has already completed 4,239 charging stations, which will soon commence operations.
BYD’s focus on integrating its Flash Charging network with existing infrastructure may significantly enhance convenience for EV users. With these advancements, BYD is positioned to redefine the charging experience for electric vehicles, making it faster and more efficient than ever.
