Rahm Accuses European Tour of Extorting LIV Players to Rejoin

Jon Rahm has strongly criticized the European Tour, alleging that it is extorting LIV Golf players who wish to rejoin. This marked Rahm’s first public statement since the European Tour announced its controversial terms for LIV players. The new agreement mandates these players to pay previous fines for not obtaining necessary releases and to participate in additional tournaments designated by the tour.

Rahm’s Rejection of the European Tour’s Terms

While eight LIV players, including Tyrrell Hatton, accepted the deal, Rahm chose to reject it. “I don’t know what game they’re trying to play right now,” he stated. He expressed concern that the European Tour is leveraging its position to benefit from LIV players while imposing unjust fines.

Additional Tournament Requirements

The European Tour has set a requirement for players to participate in four tournaments, excluding majors. Rahm highlighted that the new deal would obligate LIV players to compete in six tournaments instead. “And they dictate where two of those have to be,” he added, expressing his discontent with the stipulations.

  • Players are generally required to play four events to maintain membership.
  • Rahm emphasized that he should have the freedom to choose where he competes.
  • He clarified that he has never been asked for a release to play on the PGA Tour or DP World Tour in the past.

Fines and Membership Concerns

Rahm’s fines arise from competing in LIV events that overlapped with European Tour events without prior release approvals. While he utilized a “home tour” policy to play in European events, Rahm is apprehensive about the ramifications of the fines. He stated that if the minimum participation requirement were reduced to four tournaments, he would reconsider the terms.

The ongoing appeal concerning his fines has implications for his future, including participation in upcoming Ryder Cup events. The decision by the Sports Resolution panel in April 2023 supported the tour’s right to impose penalties, raising further concerns for Rahm’s membership status.

CEO’s Response and Future Prospects

In response to Rahm’s situation, Guy Kinnings, CEO of the European Tour Group, outlined the possible routes for Rahm. He indicated that Rahm must either withdraw from his appeal and pay the fines or continue through the appeal process. The outcome of this process will determine Rahm’s status within the tour.

Rahm also addressed Rory McIlroy’s earlier comments about the fines, noting that the situation is more complex than it seems. “I’ll gladly pay my way to go on the Ryder Cup,” he reaffirmed, provided he isn’t required to pay fines just to maintain his tour membership.

The ongoing conflict between LIV players and the European Tour is increasingly becoming a focal point in professional golf, highlighting the challenges players face in navigating the evolving landscape of the sport.
